English Vegan Battenberg

There are a few theories as to where this cake originated from. My favourite one is that the cake was named in honour of the marriage of Princess Victoria, a granddaughter of Queen Victoria, to Prince Louis of Battenberg in 1884 – according to wikipedia.

I’ve veganised this classic English cake in the latest episode of my cooking series VEGAN AROUND THE WORLD. I even asked a British person to come and review the cake at the end of the show to see how it compares the original recipe. You can watch the first 5 mins of the episode below.

Vegan German’s Chocolate Cake

The German’s Chocolate cake originated in the USA when the recipe was published in the Dallas Morning Newspaper in 1957. If it’s one thing I have learnt from researching this recipe is that marketing is everything.

This vegan version of the cake consists of a light fluffy subtly chocolate cake with a pecan coconut caramel. Some versions also include a chocolate buttercream around the outside.

The original recipe included a bar of Bakers German’s Sweet Chocolate. The recipe was distributed across America making it a household recipe, increasing sales by 73% (according to wikipedia).
